BIOGRAPHY

Chinese pianist Weiran Chen began studying piano at the age of six. She earned first place at the “Mido”Concours De Tiano Sino-Francais at the age of 8. Since then she also won prizes at the TOYAMA Asia Youth Music Competition (Piano section), the Kingsburg International Piano Competition, Beethoven International Music Competition to name but a few.
Chen completed her Bachelor’s degree with Graeme McNaught, Heather Slade-Lipkin, Aaron Shorr and Isobel Anderson at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she has participated in a “Chopin 24 Etudes” project, led by Roy Howat. Howat, a pianist and musicologist, edited Chopin’s etudes as part of the new Peter Complete Chopin 24 Etudes edition as well as the English edition of Jean-Jacques Eigeldinger’s Chopin: Pianist and Teacher. She completed her Recital Artist Diploma with Anthony Byrne and Hugh Tinney while also teaching piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She graduated from a Master of Music at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee under the tutelage of Michael Lewin.
Chen’s musical journey has also included piano studies with Leon McCawley, as well as improvisation studies with Norman Beedie in Scotland, Pierre Hurel in the United States, and masterclasses across the globe with Bryce Morrison, John O’Conor, Petras Geniušas, Roy Howat, William Fong and more.
Performance opportunities have brought Chen to the U.K, Austria, Ireland and the U.S. She has played at the prestigious halls, such as Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Ehrbar Hall in Vienna, National Concert Hall and Royal Dublin Society Concert Hall in Dublin. She has performed extensively at the Glasgow Piano Festival of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Edinburgh International Festival, and the Closing Ceremony of the 45th Anniversary of China-UK Ambassadorial Diplomatic Relations to name a few.
During her graduate studies in Boston, she explored a wider variety of performances, including a spectrum project and woodwind ensemble. In 2021, she participated in a project, collaborating and improvising with other musicians, dancers, theater actors and actresses, in partnership with Emerald Necklace Conservancy, MF Dynamics and the Silkroad Ensemble.
Chen looks forward to bringing her piano expertise and global worldview to future collaborations, concerts, masterclasses, private instruction, lectures, panels and partnerships.
